Choosing an agent
Is the agent
right for you? Six questions to ask.
Thinking about working with a football agent? These six questions help you and your family prepare for a first conversation and compare options. What matters is getting answers you can understand.
Back to home1. Who will I work with?
Ask who you’ll speak to day to day, who handles club discussions and how important decisions are agreed. You should know who to contact if your situation changes.
If several people work in the team, ask how responsibilities are shared. A well-known agency name alone does not answer these questions.
2. What supports my development?
Ask which footballing roles could suit you and why. Your current stage of development, role at your club and any information still needed for a recommendation all matter.
Staying at your current club may also make sense. Compare the reasons behind recommendations rather than focusing only on leagues and club names.
3. How are services and fees agreed?
Clarify services, fees, duration and options for ending the working relationship. What will the agency handle? Which responsibilities remain with you? Get open questions answered before making a commitment.
This guide does not replace an individual contract review. It helps you prepare for a conversation. A contact enquiry and a binding representation agreement are separate steps.
4. How does football fit my life?
Talk about school, vocational training, university, travel and a possible move. For under-18s, parents or legal guardians should be involved.
Your personal surroundings and day-to-day support matter in professional football too. Ask how these factors are considered in decisions.
5. What happens when things change?
Ask how the agency would help you assess less playing time, a changed role or a transfer that falls through. How will you stay in touch, and how will your goals be reviewed?
Promises of professional contracts, appearances or transfers are not a reliable measure. What matters is a clear explanation of opportunities and limitations.
6. How can I check the agency?
Look for named contacts, legal provider details and specific experience. You can use FIFA’s agent directory to check licences.
If you ask other players about their experiences, consider their circumstances. What works for another player may not be right for you.
For your first conversation
Note down your club, position, one footballing goal and two questions. You don’t need to prepare anything else for the first message. You can discuss your personal circumstances in the conversation that follows.
